Easterly Supports: Environmental Aid Fund
It seems every day we’re faced with more ramifications of climate change and environmental impacts. Wildfire season used to last only from October to April, but today we’re seeing larger disasters year-round. Flooding concerns are no longer constrained to predicted flood zones. Global temperature rise is causing loss of habitat for plants, animals, and human beings. Now more than ever our daily actions impact the environment, and it is imperative that we continue to educate ourselves and take action to reduce our environmental footprint. Forest fires continue to plague California, forever impacting many different communities and ecosystems. In 2021 alone, roughly 2.6 million acres of land was damaged by a fire in California. Given our high concentration of employees and properties within California, we selected two important organizations to help combat natural disasters in a state that has been disproportionately impacted by extreme weather. As a building owner with sustainability at the forefront of our Company's efforts, Emily Pierce, Director of Sustainability, recommended two charities whose efforts directly support the preservation and protection of the natural environment, with a specific focus on California. These two organizations, The National Park Conservation Association and the California Fire Safe Council, are both recognized and certified 501(c)3 organizations. This Campaign will be open from July 1 – September 30 with a stated goal of reaching $2,500 in employee giving. Further, if we reach 100% employee participation, long time California resident, Mike Ibe will match donations dollar for dollar up to $1,500.00!

Strong Roots-CX SP EMEAR Forest Fund
Leveraging on our strong roots, CX SP EMEAR has set a Big Hairy Ambitious Goal: To plant not just 10, 20 or 100 trees, we want to create a forest! In partnership with One Tree Planted, we are targeting to create a forest in Kitui. For every $1 you donate 1 tree gets planted. This project in Kitui, Kenya, is more than a mission to off-set carbon emissions, it is about empowering a community. We deliberately chose this project due to the potential far-reaching impact it will have not just on the environment but more so on the community as well. Your donation will benefit the environment and community in the following ways: Improved soil fertility Protecting crops and livestock from extreme weather events Restoring degraded lands Improving water conservation Prevention of soil erosion Increasing tree cover Increasing biodiversity Climate change adaptation and mitigation Improving ecosystems services Conservation and creation of fauna habitat Improving the health and nutrition of vulnerable rural households Sustainable Livelihoods Increasing the levels of Income per household Women empowerment and gender equality on natural resource management Increasing crop productivity and food security Fuel wood provision in situ Rescuing local and traditional ethno-botanical uses such as medicine Shade provision for livestock and humans Improve access and quality of diverse ecosystem services Help us impact this community for generations to come! Give today and tell a friend. Learn more about One Tree Planted here: https://onetreeplanted.org. Fundraising Update: In 2022 we raised $11,000 (equal to 11,000 trees), surpassing our target of $10,000. In 2023 we want to raise an additional $9000 to get to our next target milestone of $20,000.

Forests for the Earth Fund
The latest IPCC report on climate change spells code red for our planet. Disasters such as wildfires, hurricanes, flooding and drought are continuing to rise. There's no doubt that human impact is the main driver, but there is hope. People and organizations everywhere are working to reverse these impacts and preserve nature. And nature is resilient. Take Chernobyl, the site of a nuclear meltdown in 1986. Within 30 years, forests, marshes, fields and rivers reclaimed the land, reversing the effects of hundreds of years of human development. Diverse wildlife, including beaver, bison, birds, fish and more re-populated this no-man's land. Even more surprising, the wolf population in Chernobyl is seven times higher than nearby nature reserves. According to 1t.org, "Forests are an essential part of the solution to tackle climate change and biodiversity collapse. Forests make us healthier and more resilient; they filter air pollution and reduce heat islands in cities; and they can propel new drug discoveries to treat current and future diseases." For more on why forests are so critical, download the presentation "Why Forests Are Key to Solving Global Challenges Like Climate Change" -- https://www.slideshare.net/nekochan2000/why-forests-are-key-to-solving-challenges-like-climate-change In the words of David Attenborough, "A future with more forests is key to the resilience of our planet. If we choose to give forests time and space, they could re-clothe the earth with much of the rich and varied communities of animals and plants of which we have, so recently, robbed it." All of the nonprofits in this Fund are highly rated on Charity Navigator and Guidestar, and several are part of 1t.org's work to conserve, restore and grow one trillion trees by 2030. They include nonprofits working on these areas of forest conservation: 1. Conservation of U.S. forests 2. Conservation of forests across the globe, including critical rainforests 3. Forest conservation through carbon offsets 4. Legal protection for forests 5. Reforestation and support for indigenous people Read the blog to learn more about how the nonprofits were vetted - https://hello.brightfunds.org/blog/forests-for-the-earth-and-how-to-create-a-fund/

Reforestation By The Next Generation Fund
We believe that a healthy ecosystem and thriving biodiversity are essential for every community. We are all a part of this quest and in Tanzania, we have started a reforestation project to contribute to this objective. Desertification is a big issue in the area. It is caused mostly by human activity and lack of alternative practices when it comes to agriculture. Soil erosion worsens every year, and contributes to lower farming outcomes, and an increase in the annual floodings from the nearby river which have destroyed homes and crops. Local schools and leaders of the area have started working on a Tree planting project to mitigate these issues. Their idea is that tree-planting is a sustainable solution to these problems that will contribute to a healthier environment. We want to support them and help accelerate this initiative that will also contribute to our global environmental challenges. The plan: more than 10,000 trees will be grown by students of a local Secondary School and transplanted along the riverbank and throughout the community. The students have set up an environmental club that is coordinating these efforts, supported by their teachers, and have already started working. One tree at a time, the students are reforesting the area! On the side, awareness campaigns in the community will be conducted so that this initiative is appreciated and cared for by everyone who will benefit from it. You can join us!
